She may be an international star, but to Billy Ray Cyrus daughter Miley is still his little girl. That’s why it’s been so difficult for him to watch the recent events: the infamous video of her smoking the herb salvia from a bong and the 18th birthday party that he refused to attend because it was in a bar. Billy Ray admits that he let Miley handlers take too much control over his daughter’s life while forcing all the blame for her actions onto him. As an example, he talks about her 18th birthday party at the El Lay club, Trousdale. He explains: “You know why I didn’t go? Because they were having it in a bar. It was wrong. It was for 21 years old and up . . . all them people, they all wanted me to fly out so that then when all the bad press came they could say, ‘Daddy endorsed this stuff.’ I started realizing I’m being used.”
He tells GQ, “Every time the train went off the track . . . her people, or as they say in today’s news, her handlers, every time they’d put the blame on me.I took it because I’m her daddy…OK, nail me to the cross”
Then photos surfaced of Miley smoking the legal herb salvia from a bong. Billy Ray, who gave the interview to GQ’s Chris Heath five days after the photos emerged, says he hadn’t spoken to Miley since, but confronted one of her handlers: “They told me it was none of my business.”
Billy Ray adds, “I want to get her sheltered from the storm. Stop the insanity just for a minute. When you go through what she’s been through, it takes a beating on you. And there comes a point where you just got to step back.”
But the “Achy Breaky Heart” singer says he feels squeezed out of her life. He reminds people that while that he appeared with her on the hit show Hannah Montana, he’s not her manager and has no professional say her life.
Billy Ray also said that Miley’s handlers meddled in his relationship with his daughter and prevented him from properly parenting her through difficult situations, including the Vanity Fair cover scandal and her controversial pole dancing performance at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards.
“For the record,” he says, “to set it straight, I want to tell you: I’ve never made a dime off of Miley. You got a lot of people have made percentages off of her. I’m proud to say to this day I’ve never made one commissioned dollar, or dime, off of my daughter.”
Billy Ray blames the problems on bad advice given to Miley by her handlers and the pressures of the Disney Channel show, particularly the shooting of the final episodes in January 2010. By the fall, Billy Ray would be in divorce proceedings with Miley’s mother, Tish Cyrus.
“The damn show destroyed my family,” he says. “And I sit there and go, ‘Yeah, you know what? Some gave all.’ It is my motto, and guess what? I have to eat that one. I some-gave-all’d it all right. I some-gave-all’d it while everybody else was going to the bank. It’s all sad. I hate to say it, but yes, I do. I’d take it back in a second.”
He also added “I think that Kurt Cobain’s world was just spinning so fast and he had so many people around him that didn’t help him. Like Anna Nicole Smith–you could see that train wreck coming … I should have been a better parent. I should have said, ‘Enough is enough–it’s getting dangerous and somebody’s going to get hurt.’ I should have, but I didn’t … Honestly, I didn’t know the ball was out of bounds until it was way up in the stands somewhere.”
